A collection of apps for everything from task management to audio analysis for your Android device.
By Curtis Emery

They have an app for just about everything these days and each app is useful to someone. Some apps however, are a lot more useful than others. Take AV apps for example, it is not hard to see the value in an application that turns your phone into your digital toolbox. Forget lengthy preparations before going to a job or worrying that your tool might not be effective in the room you are working with, with the right set of AV apps on your Android device, a job well done can be as easy as a swipe of your finger.

There are a few different types of apps every AV professional should have on their phone: audio analysis, lighting guides, video and a selection of productivity apps. The following 30 apps showcase a few apps from each category to demonstrate the wide range of AV apps out on the Android market today.

When it comes to audio apps it is important to have options for spectrum analysis, db-SPL readings and tone and frequency generators. With these types of apps and a few others (depending on your specific need), staging a speaker system or testing the acoustics of a room can be performed on your Android device.

Lighting apps can be very specific, some guide users through specific models and manufacturers. For the most part it is important to have a DMX calculator and a beam calculator, with these apps you will be able measure light and understand how to better rig a lighting system in your specific environment.

Video apps are great for place and setting up projectors. It is important to at least have a projection simulation app on your Android device if you do any work with video—making sure you have an accurate simulation can be the difference between a good display and a failed presentation. Having a good simulator on your device can alleviate any concerns conveniently and efficiently.

Productivity apps are just convenient. When you have a lot of tasks to do, people to meet and places to go, it can get confusing and at times even overwhelming. Having a good set of productivity apps can offer you the piece of mind you need to focus on your job and finish the day off strong.

Alongside these main categories, it is important to make sure your phone is protected, especially in the Android market. Google play can be a danger zone with adware and other non-vetted applications that might do your device harm. Make sure your phone is protected with a strong mobile security app. A great mobile security app will make sure your data stays on your device so you can keep working in safety.

Interesting set of programs for the AV pro. But, what's missing and really needed is an audio editor app that will recognize external microphones, such as a USB microphone. To date, I have not been able to find any. Once this becomes available, Android will become a useful tool in the field.

Jerry-- Thanks for the suggestion. If you are looking for an audio recording/editing app with external mic capability you might want to check out RecForge Pro [https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dje073.android.audiorecorder&hl=en], I haven't personally tried it (there is a lite version if you are having doubts), but there is an external input feature. Unfortunately, it is not USB-- see FAQ [www.facebook.com/RecForge/app_160430850678443] for input requirements, you will need an adapter to select a separate channel for the output. I am not sure if this is what you are looking for, but hopefully this can tide you over until Android apps start supporting USB mics.

Curtis; I checked it out and it appears the program has some serious issues with pausing when an incoming call comes in. I'm hoping that tablets with Andriod can one day be a useful tool in the field as a recording/editing device with a professional microphone preferably via USB. Thanks for the suggestion.

why would you be trying hard to find apps that work on this platfrom when they already exist for Apples iPhone?

There are some of us that have an aversion to anything Apple. I am one of them. It has to do with control issues.
