A Look at IP Control
We take a quick look at the time and cost benefits of electronics with IP connectivity.

IP connectivity is taking over many electronics. The ability to control devices via IP can offer levels of flexibility not previously possible.

Many manufacturers have embraced advancements in IP technology over the past several years. A/V gear with IP is well suited for a variety of environments and offers many advantages. Flexibility is key to any well-designed A/V system and adding IP control can elevate those levels.

Having devices with IP connectivity and control means there’s also an option for remote access. Having this option makes service calls both easier and less expensive. IP connectivity has made it possible for remote operation from devices like the iPad. This type of control has become increasingly popular in houses of worship and is widely used in pro audio applications.

My company recently installed an IP-enabled digital mixer in a Southern California church. The digital mixer handles all the sanctuary microphones and auxiliary inputs, without needing to drill new holes, run new conduit, etc. The church sound engineer can now control the sound from the balcony utilizing a computer application. In essence, this product features a GUI that looks identical to a real mixer surface. I tested several applications when looking into a digital mixer that would be well suited for this particular church. There are many brands available that are user friendly and offer economical solutions despite being “digital mixers.”

Given the level of flexibility and potential cost savings for all involved, IP control will likely continue to become more prevalent as times goes on.
