First Baptist Church Goes to the Mall
The church took over the 475,000-square-foot former Lakeland Mall, in Lakeland, FL, in 2006. Both organizations have lengthy histories — the mall first opened in 1971 and featured about 45 stores, with Montgomery Ward and Woolco as the main anchors, and was successful until 1988 when the newer Lakeland Square Mall nearly twice its size opened a few miles away. First Baptist Church of Lakeland in Florida was founded somewhat earlier, in 1885, with 12 charter members worshipping in a 32-foot by 50-foot wooden frame structure. Today the church's new home features state-of-the art A/V.
